Abstract
L’histoire de Bellinde et Celion est celle des amours contrariées de deux jeunes gens, finalement réunis par celui qui eût pu les séparer. Ses protagonistes rivalisent en vertu. Le geste d’Ergaste, renonçant au mariage par admiration pour la « belle et vertueuse amitié » des jeunes gens, se distingue néanmoins par sa magnanimité. Honoré d’Urfé a écrit un roman exposant « les divers effets de l’honnête amitié », ainsi que l’annonce le sous-titre de L’Astrée. Quelle en est pourtant la nature ? On pourrait conclure de l’histoire étudiée que l’amitié la plus noble est celle d’Ergaste, souhaitant être « reçu comme frère » des amants. Nous proposons plutôt de la lire en tenant compte du projet global du roman, lequel aspire à définir un lien découlant d’une réelle affection entre personnes de sexe opposé et susceptible de conduire au mariage; celui-là même qui fait naître l’admiration d’Ergaste. Aussi l’apparente indistinction de l’amour et de l’amitié, laissant croire à la possibilité de changer la passion en affection vertueuse, fait-elle place dans le récit à une apologie de la toute-puissance de l’amour.
