D 'emblée, l'archéologie a été une science-fiction (Boucher de Perthes). Que disent les choses matérielles ? De quoi parlent les vestiges ?On les trouve dans un présent qui est le nôtre, ils témoignent du présent qui est le nôtre. Leur paradoxe est d'avoir été produits à un mom ent unique et précis dans le passé (telle année, tel jour, telle heure) alors qu'aujourd'hui, vus depuis le présent, ils ne renvoient qu 'à une probabilité de datation.Ce phénomène est devenu manifeste avec l'archéologie du paysage : si certains linéaments découverts sont connotés d'un caractère qui permet de les dater plus ou moins précisément, d'autres ne pourront jamais l'être, d 'autant plus que certaines structures survivent puisque les choses sont créées dans la matière. Une telle réalité physique rend très difficile de s'en tenir à une perspective linéaire classique : ce n'est pas le passé, mais les temporalités conservées du passé qu'étudie l'archéologue, qui cherche à explorer toutes les dimensions temporelles du présent en s'intéressant à la nature même des vestiges archéologiques.
