Shipping in the Canadian Arctic is regulated by the Zone-Date System and outside its permissible dates by the Arctic Ice Regime Shipping System, which is used with certain conditions. This paper presents a methodology developed to examine the existing regulatory systems, describes results of the evaluation of the two existing systems, discusses their limitations, and outlines approaches, which were recommended as a more suitable means of pollution prevention in Canada’s Arctic waters. These approaches were presented and discussed at a meeting with the key stakeholders of the Arctic Shipping Pollution Prevention Regulations (ASPPR) including representatives of the ship owners and operators, and oil industry. It was concluded that an approach, which would make use of both Systems will be developed including the integration of the Polar Class vessels into the System.
