Abstract
Née et élevée dans le Missouri mais imprégnée de culture française depuis sa plus tendre enfance, Kate Chopin n’hésita pas à utiliser nombre de termes français ou créoles dans des textes pourtant destinés à un public anglophone. La fréquence de ces termes est toutefois extrêmement variable d’une nouvelle ou d’un roman à l’autre, ce qui nous autorise à dépasser le simple stade de la couleur locale pour s’interroger sur les motivations réelles de l’auteur et la mise en place d’une éventuelle stratégie d’écriture en lien avec la portée idéologique de l’œuvre. Cet article propose ainsi d’examiner « La Belle Zoraïde » comme un drame métalinguistique dans lequel le conflit entre les sphères langagières redouble et prolonge la tragédie de l’héroïne éponyme. Il propose alors dans un second temps une lecture de The Awakening qui s’articule autour de la recherche par son héroïne d’une autre langue – voire d’un au-delà du langage – qui lui permette d’exprimer l’essence de la femme intraduisible qu’elle est devenue.
