Abstract
In this chapter the focus is on the economic crisis of 2007 and recent policy initiatives introduced around austerity. Here it is suggested that we cannot understand either the ‘causes’ or the political responses that followed without recognising the growing influence of neoliberal philosophy and practice. In this chapter the analysis of this historical and contemporary process concentrates on events in the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, where there is greater synergy, although, as we shall see, differences can and do exist, showing that its introduction and practice has not always been linear, smooth or without contradictions. The discussion also looks at the implications of these developments for young people and their citizenship. The final section examines in detail how these states have responded, over the past eight years to the crisis and the recession that followed.
