Certains mots portent le lourd passé des faits ou des groupes qu’ils nomment ; « nègre » et « juif » sont indéniablement de ceux-là. L’analyse récente d’événements médiatiques au cours desquels ces deux mots ont été utilisés, ce qui a valu aux auteurs des sanctions populaires et institutionnelles, montre les risques à les utiliser. Dans le premier cas, c’est l’usage même du terme qui, en opposition avec son correspondant plus acceptable Noir, a été fortement décrié : dans un sketch qui se voulait humoristique lors d’une émission de télévision québécoise très grand public (Bye Bye 2008, diffusé le 31 décembre 2008 par Radio Canada), le terme « nègre » associé à des commentaires raciaux stéréotypés ont fait scandale. Dans le second, ce sont les inférences ethnotypiques qui ont causé problème : dans un billet d’humeur (Charlie Hebdo, 2 juillet 2008), le chroniqueur Siné a commenté le mariage de Jean Sarkozy, faisant d’après certains commentateurs ressortir l’équation « juif et argent ». Dans ce texte, nous analysons ces deux événements, c’est-à-dire les discours sources et les réactions qu’ils ont suscités, afin de comprendre comment se créent et se propagent dans une communauté les connotations péjoratives qui accablent les désignatifs ethniques ou raciaux. En filigrane, c’est toute la question de ce qui devient insultant qui est posée avec, d’un côté, le seuil de tolérance aux propos potentiellement vexatoires et de l’autre, l’ingéniosité à identifier des inférences ou des intentions à des propos qui ne le seraient pas nécessairement.
