Il a été démontré que c’est le niveau de charge perceptuelle qui détermine la réussite ou l’échec de l’exclusion d’un distracteur lors d’une tâche attentionnelle (Lavie, 1995). Lavie, Ro et Russell (2003) ont démontré que le visage humain est le seul distracteur qui va à l’encontre de la théorie de la charge perceptuelle, dans le sens qu’il est impossible de l’ignorer et ce, même en situation de charge perceptuelle élevée. Par ailleurs, plusieurs évidences scientifiques soutiennent l’idée que la stimulation visuelle provoquée par des représentations d’animaux active la même zone cérébrale que celle activée par les visages humains, soit l’aire fusiforme des visages. La présente étude vise donc à vérifier si la représentation d’une face animale utilisée comme distracteur dans une tâche attentionnelle de classification de noms produit le même effet de résistance à la distraction que le visage humain. Nos résultats n’ont pas corroboré cette attente et suggèrent que le visage humain demeure le seul stimulus qui va à l’encontre de la théorie de la charge perceptuelle.
