Abstract
Born after World War II in the Polish city of Wrocław, Eva Stachniak grew up among ruins and people resettled from “somewhere else.” Montreal, where she moved with a doctoral fellowship to attend McGill University, also teemed with immigrants. Due to her fascination with the ways history and culture shape our lives, Stachniak’s fiction is informed by her immigrant experience and her academic career teaching literature. She writes in her second language, English.
