El presente artículo trata sobre cómo la integración de las personas y de los grupos sociales a la sociedad, especialmente de poblaciones vulnerables, ha sido siempre objeto central del servicio social en Quebec. Desde mediados de los años setenta, la inserción, junto a su misión de adaptación y control social, ha captado mucho más la atención del trabajo social luego de importantes cambios sociales (Goyette, 2004). Así, poblaciones que no acostumbraban a recurrir a programas de servicio social ni al Estado, –mujeres y personas en general, pero sobre todo los jóvenes- van desde entonces a ocupar el centro de interés del servicio social y de las políticas públicas. Frente a esto, el servicio social llevará su preocupación al tema de la inserción de la juventud, en la medida en que el aumento de figuras de exclusión refuerza la necesidad de favorecer los valores de solidaridad, justicia social, respeto y autonomía, bandera de esta disciplina tanto en su ética como en su práctica.
