Abstract
Yusef Bunchy Shakur's life story is one of incredible transformation, redemption, and inspiration. He grew up near Linwood and West Grand Boulevard, on the lower west side of Detroit. By the age of 13, he had been kicked out of every Detroit public school he went to. As a teenager, he helped co-found the Zone 8 gang, one of the most notorious gangs in the City of Detroit. He then went to prison for a crime he did not commit. In prison, he met his father. It was that relationship that had a tremendous impact on transforming and redeeming his life, like his father did prior to him arriving. When he emerged from prison, he walked out as a revolutionary, not the gangbanger he went in as, dedicated to black liberation and to making his neighborhood a better place. Shakur has published two memoires, The Window 2 My Soul (2010, Urban Guerrilla Publishing) and My Soul Looks Back (2012). He is a well-sought-after speaker, both in Detroit and further afield. His most inspirational work can be found in the role he plays in the neighborhood where he grew up and continues to live. Shakur organizes an annual neighborhood festival backpack giveaway in the yard next to his house. Between 500 and 800 backpacks are given away each year to local children. The backpacks are filled with school supplies and books, and free food for all participants is provided. The giveaway brings together more than 1000 people through a peaceful event where neighbors can engage with each other and where children can be children and run around having fun without the thought of being shot or beat down. In addition to this event, Shakur has led a neighborhood-warming project during the winter to help provide resources in different parts of the city in what he describes as “neighborhood deserts.” Shortly after our conversation, he launched a project aimed at resisting gentrification by working toward transforming an abandoned house into a community center, which will not only provide amenities and resources for the neighborhood, but also act as a place to support indigenous leadership.
