Interpretato come sintomo di un riflusso narrativo dopo i capolavori del realismo magico degli anni Venti, il romanzo di Massimo Bontempelli La famiglia del fabbro (1931) è stato generalmente trascurato dalla critica. Quest’intervento propone una interpretazione dell’opera come anticipazione e critica di quella crisi dell’ontologia che caratterizza la narrativa postmoderna. Il protagonista, il fabbro Eteocle, è una ulteriore permutazione della figura del candido, incapace di accettare una realtà priva di forti fondamenta (tutto il dramma si gioca infatti sull’impossibilità di stabilire la verità circa il delitto compiuto nella cittadina del fabbro, Valòria). Come la protagonista eponima di Minnie la candida, di cui costituisce quasi la controparte comica, Eteocle è alla ricerca della verità in un universo in cui essa non ha più una funzione « fondativa ».
