Abstract
BMPs function in establishing the anterior-posterior axis of the gut.We tested the hypothesis that the development of the enteric nervous system (ENS), which occurs after this axis is established, is also BMPdependent.In the E12 rat gut, when GDNF stimulates proliferation of crest-derived (CD) precursors, and at E14, when a subset acquires NT-3 dependence, the gut contains transcripts encoding BMPs -2 and -4 (not -7), the receptor (BMPR) subunits, -II, -IA and -IB, and the antagonists, noggin, gremlin, follistatin, and chordin.Expression of BMPs-2 and -4 were differently developmentally regulated.CD and non-CD (NCD) cells were separated and isolated from the E12 or E14 rat gut by immunoselection with antibodies to p75ntr; both populations expressed BMPRs and responded to BMPs with the phosphorylation and nuclear
