Abstract
Avant de reposer la lancinante question : « qu’est-ce qu’un topos ? », il faut préciser ce que nous pouvons en attendre et nous demander de quelle conception des unités sémantiques nous avons besoin. Pour la SATOR, il s’agit il me semble de spécifier le roman comme genre, et d’individualiser des oeuvres au sein de ce genre. La première tâche conduit à s’écarter de la folkloristique, même si l’analyse structurale des récits en est issue, car si elles sont adéquates, les catégories descriptives d’un genre ne valent pas pour un autre, et l’on ne peut par exemple conclure du conte populaire au roman. Par ailleurs, le récit est une forme de macrostructure, mais n’a jamais suffi à définir un genre. La seconde tâche conduit à se rapprocher de la critique, ou du moins de ses objectifs de caractérisation. Enfin, les théories dont nous avons besoin doivent pouvoir s’adapter aux objectifs et au corpus de la SATOR.
