Este artigo reconstrói o impacto das políticas neoliberais internacionais do mundo na vida social e cultural italiana e, em particular, no sistema de ensino superior e pesquisa, que desempenham um papel central na sociedade contemporânea. Dois elementos são levados em conta: a crise do sistema capitalista e a necessidade de expansão dos mercados, mercantilizando o que antes eram considerados direitos, como a educação, cujos custos foram repassados aos trabalhadores desde os anos 1990; a substituição do modelo franco-alemão de universidades pelo anglo-saxão mais ligado a interesses empresariais e privados. Na Itália, essas diretrizes políticas têm sido aplicadas ao longo de décadas através de cortes na educação em todos os níveis, a redução de pessoal estruturado e professores, a falta de investimento em instalações, a redução do nível de preparação dos alunos e a diminuição de seu número. O resultado dessas políticas, aplicadas mais rigorosamente na era da pandemia, tem sido transformar instituições de ensino em agências para a preparação dos trabalhadores para o mercado de trabalho, levando em conta exclusivamente as necessidades do aparato produtivo e não a alta formação do futuro cidadão.
