L'immigration est devenue un sujet de première importance au Canada, non seulement\nen ce qui concerne les politiques gouvernementales, mais aussi en matière de recherche\nuniversitaire et dans les relations interprovinciales. Près d'un Canadien sur six est en\neffet né à l'étranger. A Toronto, quatre habitants sur dix sont nés hors du Canada. Plus\nde 2 500 000 nouveaux immigrants sont arrivés au cours de la dernière décennie (1990-\n2000), ce qui constitue un record depuis le début du XXème siècle.
