Abstract
Des dizaines de milliers de personnes descendantes des premiers colons français en Nouvelle-France ont émergé au cours des quinze dernières années pour revendiquer une identité autochtone en tant que « Métis » en Ontario, au Québec, en Nouvelle-Écosse et au Nouveau-Brunswick. Ce mouvement social a conduit au développement d’une nouvelle littérature savante, principalement en langue française, prônant la présence de « Métis de l’Est » détenteurs de droits autochtones constitutionnels. Afin de comprendre les arguments intellectuels en faveur des soi-disant Métis de l’Est, l’auteur passe en revue une série d’articles de périodiques, des chapitres de livres, des livres et des thèses de doctorat sur le sujet. Il examine ce matériel sous la loupe de plusieurs universitaires métis et/ou en études autochtones pour illustrer certaines des lacunes de ce sous-domaine universitaire émergent. L’article est divisé en deux grands thèmes qui émergent de la revue de littérature consacrée à ce sujet : premièrement, l’ethnogenèse métisse réinventée et, deuxièmement, les préoccupations normatives coloniales / nationales.
