Cette recherche se propose d’étudier la série Capitaine Apache, publiée dans les colonnes de l’hebdomadaire Pif Gadget entre 1975 et 1988. Série western dans la veine « réaliste », telles Jerry Spring (Jijé, 1954) ou encore Blueberry (Giraud et Charlier, 1963), elle conte les aventures trépidantes d’un jeune métis, apache du côté de sa mère et de « racines » écossaises pour le père, Okada, présenté dès la toute première aventure par ses auteurs (Norma au dessin, Roger Lécureux au scénario) comme appelé à commander, arrivé à l’âge adulte, la résistance indienne à l’épisode de la conquête de l’Ouest. Par les chiffres de publication considérables de Pif Gadget, nous posons pour hypothèse que cette série a joué un rôle non négligeable sur la représentation portée par ses multiples jeunes lecteurs (nés dans les années 1960 à 1970) sur l’histoire de cet épisode historique et ses grands espaces nord-américains. Dans une recherche récente, consacrée aux séries BD western Blueberry et Mac Coy, nous avons montré que les paysages reproduits par leurs dessinateurs s’avèrent les mêmes que ceux véhiculés par les films de l’âge d’or hollywoodien. Or, selon le géographe Michel Foucher, ces paysages filmographiques n’ont que peu de rapports avec ceux des espaces au sein desquels se sont déroulés les plus importants affrontements des guerres indiennes. En serait-il de même avec la série Capitaine Apache ?
