Abstract
Les frontières orientales du royaume de France, face au Saint-Empire, sont aux xive et xve siècles un laboratoire d’étude privilégié du phénomène frontalier dans ses dimensions politiques et culturelles. C’est le pouvoir capétien qui a d’abord réinvesti les vieilles limites issues des partages carolingiens, pour en faire un discours légitimant sa propre autorité. Dans un second temps, les frontières de terrain ont été contrôlées dans une politique à plusieurs échelles, d’une ambition globale de retenir l’argent dans le royaume au contrôle fin des communautés frontalières. Les frontaliers ont dû s’adapter à cette nouvelle réalité de l’État : sans renoncer à leurs pratiques coutumières de bon voisinage, elles ont parfois tiré parti de la frontière, en ont parfois souffert, mais ont toujours été parties prenantes de sa construction. Dans certains cas, la frontière pensée d’en haut est réellement construite d’en bas.
