Abstract
Sébastien Bennenot, curé de Pompierre, un village de Franche-Comté, se suicide le 10 janvier 1689. De cet événement ne subsiste que le dossier du procès fait à son cadavre. Notre principale question porte sur les motifs de son acte. Si nous ne parviendrons jamais à connaître les véritables raisons de son geste, cette affaire nous renseigne sur les perceptions de la folie et notamment de la mélancolie et de ses différentes formes. Elles constituaient pour la période des maux suffisamment importants et connus de tous pour expliquer l’acte le plus extrême qui soit. Nous les avons perçues et étudiées à l’aide d’une méthode bien spécifique du fait de l’isolement de notre source : la lexicométrie. Cet article propose ainsi son application sur un dossier isolé et sur un corpus réduit, prouvant son utilité pour la recherche historique.
