Abstract
A partire dal 1890, la cittadina di Barre, Vermont, vide l’arrivo di numerosi operai italiani specializzati nella lavorazione della pietra. Questi operai, provenienti principalmente da Carrara, in Toscana, erano animati da ideali di solidarietà di classe e da una forte etica del lavoro; crearono così sindacati e corporazioni, si batterono per migliorare le condizioni lavorative degli artigiani del settore, e portarono a una riconfigurazione dell’intera comunità di Barre. Il lavoro della comunità italiana fu essenziale nello sviluppo dell’industria locale e contribuì a far diventare Barre capitale mondiale del granito. Tramite un’analisi dello spazio urbano, in particolare delle statue ed edifici eretti dagli immigrati italiani, questo articolo esamina in che modo la comunità è riuscita a preservare la propria identità e i propri valori. Esamina, inoltre, i luoghi che per la comunità hanno rappresentato un ponte con la patria lontana e che preservano ancora oggi l’identità di quegli uomini che hanno letteralmente scolpito la propria storia nella pietra, lasciando per sempre memoria del loro ruolo nella costruzione dell’America.
