Questo contributo s’inserisce in una ricerca etnografica più ampia sulla “comunità italiana” di Montreal, in Canada. Il suo scopo principale è quello di illustrare la situazione della lingua italiana e delle altre lingue e dialetti parlati dai discendenti della migrazione italiana nella città. Inoltre, tale progetto è volto a sottolineare l’importanza della questione della diversità e varietà linguistica nel processo identitario del gruppo, alla ricerca di una sua italianità, e il ruolo chiave delle pratiche linguistiche e della loro evoluzione in un contesto multilingue come quello di Montreal, a contatto con due lingue dominanti: il francese e l’inglese. Le ricerche si sono svolte a Montreal, dal 2011 al 2021, e sono state raccolte 60 interviste di italiani o discendenti di emigrati italiani di diversa età, sesso, condizione socio-economica, professione e studi. L’analisi dei dati ci ha permesso di osservare alcune caratteristiche peculiari dell’italiano parlato a Montreal, ed è stato inoltre possibile studiare il ruolo chiave e il particolare statuto dell’italiano attraverso ideologie e rappresentazioni, come elemento dell’identità comunitaria e della costruzione della cosiddetta italianità.
