Compact Harmonic Transmitter and Receiver Architectures for Multifunction Wireless Systems

Abstract
In this paper, compact harmonic transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) topologies for extremely low-power large-scale array transceivers, suitable for multifunction wireless systems, are presented and demonstrated for the first time. A parallel feedback harmonic oscillator is used as the core block of both Tx and Rx architectures. A diplexer is included in the feedback path of the parallel feedback oscillator to resolve both low sensitivity issues of the implemented mixer-first Rx and frequency pulling effects of the Tx oscillator, which are common drawbacks of compact Rx and Tx structures. The principle of operation and design process are thoroughly studied and discussed.
