Quantum Field Theory and the Path Integral PreliminariesWe will consider the case of a classical scalar field theory and its quantization.Later in this book we will consider both vector and spinor fields.A classical scalar field φ(x μ ) is a real-valued function of the coordinates of space and time.The meaning that it is a scalar field is that the value that the function takes is invariant under Lorentz transformations.All inertial observers measure the same value for the field at a given spacetime point.
