Abstract
Nommé à la vice-Présidence du Conseil (fév. 1941), l’amiral de la flotte François Darlan reçoit mission du maréchal Pétain de relancer avec l’Allemagne nazie la collaboration dont le principe a été posé aux entretiens de Montoire (oct. 1940). Darlan élabore une collaboration d’État dans le but de remplacer la convention d’armistice par un statut nouveau permettant à la France de récupérer sa souveraineté au prix de l’alliance militaire avec le Reich. Mais Berlin rejette l’offre du gouvernement de Vichy et Darlan démissionne, remplacé par Pierre Laval. Présent à Alger lors du débarquement anglo-saxon en Afrique du Nord (7-8 nov. 1942), Darlan renonce définitivement au mirage de la collaboration et relance l’Empire dans la guerre aux côtés des Alliés.
