Abstract
Significance Smith became premier by winning the leadership contest of the governing United Conservative Party (UCP), defeating more moderate opponents in a ballot of party members. Her victory sets up a polarising provincial election next year between her hard-right brand of conservativism and the left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP). Impacts The Smith government will work to further the interests of the province’s oil and gas sector by increasing export volumes. Even while opposing it, the federal government will benefit from revenue generated by UCP support for the fossil fuel sector. The UCP will push through coal mining and other natural resource extraction projects although these are generally unpopular. Alberta’s coming election offers a clear test for the far-right movement that grew out of the Freedom Convoy at the start of 2022.
