Abstract
L’une des originalités de l’œuvre de Richard Millet est d’entrer en dialogue tout à la fois avec Faulkner et avec Proust. À partir de La Gloire des Pythre (1995), l’écrivain construit autour de son village natal, rebaptisé Siom, un territoire littéraire qu’il peuple de personnages et d’histoires entre réalité et légende, à la manière du comté de Yoknapatawpha, et dans une forme polyphonique qui doit aussi quelque chose à Faulkner. Mais quand, avec Ma vie parmi les ombres(2002), il entreprend, via un narrateur alter ego, de partir à la recherche de son enfance et de son histoire familiale, tout en racontant son cheminement vers l’écriture, c’est sous le signe d’un rapport proustien à la mémoire, aux sensations, à la lecture. L’article s’attache à identifier les échos des deux grands romanciers dans ces deux romans majeurs de la littérature contemporaine.
