Abstract Egypt’s Red Sea coast underwent extensive tourism development throughout the 1980s and 90s. It is believed that these have been the cause of extensive environmental damage, particularly to the ecologically sensitive coral reefs that extend across much of the coast. This case study looks at the neighboring towns of Hurghada and El Gouna. Although Hurghada and El Gouna are identical destinations in terms of weather, water clarity, corals, watersports, and many other characteristics, they differ drastically in terms of environmental commitment.
