Abstract
Adolescence is a period of the life course involving extensive change. Adolescence is associated with a shift in cognitive development, social roles, institutions, attachments, concerns and stress. This chapter concerns the relationships among a small, largely female, group of students in their last year at a Montreal high school. Adolescence and friendship become incorporated into a tautology of personal relationships which obscures the structure and circumstances of adolescent peer relationships. The chapter deconstructs this relationship by reassessing four features commonly attributed to it as they bear on a group of high school leavers in Montreal: that true friendships are private, free-floating relationships; that adolescents have more time for developing such friendships and fewer competing commitments; that friendship takes on a special intensity in adolescence; that adolescent friendships are necessarily transient as a function of life cycle changes.
