A primeira impressão deste texto se deu no dia 07 de dezembro de 1810, no jornal Berliner Abendblätter, publicado por Julius Eduard Hitzig e editado pelo próprio Kleist. O jornal teve uma curta existência: do dia 01 de outubro de 1810 até o dia 30 de março de 1811, ano em que Kleist viria a falecer. Nele foram publicados diversos textos do autor, incluindo Sobre o teatro de marionetes, de 12 a 15 de dezembro de 1810, em quatro episódios. A sua temática evoca, em tom de admoestação, a relação de anterioridade e posterioridade entre ação e ponderação. Quanto à presente edição, foi adotado o formato bilí­ngue: primeiramente a tradução em português e em seguida o texto original em alemão.
