Abstract
Canadian theorists have produced several versions of multiculturalism. Best known is Will Kymlicka’s liberal multinationalism and an alternative is Gérard Bouchard’s majoritarian interculturalism. Each has problems accommodating religious minorities. By contrast to both liberal multinationalism and majoritarian interculturalism, the Bristol School of Multiculturalism is a bottom-up politics that seeks an egalitarian public recognition for the minority identities important to their bearers, without exceptionalizing religion, and remaking the national identity so that all citizens can have a sense of belonging to it. In relation to religious groups this creates a challenge for all understandings of secularism based on privatization of religion or state neutrality or separation. Accordingly, this chapter offers an account of political secularism that is compatible with multiculturalism and conducive to being multiculturalized.
