Abstract
Lorsque Victor Hugo débarque à Paris en 1870, son retour sur sa terre natale est célébré comme un triomphe dionysiaque par un peuple qui vit le retour du fils sous le mode du fantasme biblique. Dix-neuf années se sont passées depuis décembre 1851 lorsque la figure tutélaire de Paris a fui la capitale avec un faux passeport pour se réfugier en Belgique. Hugo était convaincu que la révolte populaire était en marche qui allait bouter hors de France l’usurpateur. Mais Louis-Napoléon sort renforcé de la tempête et Hugo est confronté à la situation qu’il redoutait le plus : être coupé de sa patrie. Alors que Jean Valjean passe, lui aussi, dix-neuf ans de bagne pour avoir cherché à sauver ses neveux, on estime l’étendue du traumatisme de celui pour qui de telles contradictions ne pourraient se soutenir que sur les pilotis d’un roman aux accents néo-burlesques. Mais une fois au cœur de l’exil, Hugo est métamorphosé, semblant sortir d’une chrysalide l’ayant longtemps emprisonné.
