Abstract
En l’an 169 av. J.-C., Lucius Aemilius Paullus (Paul-Émile) fut élu pour la seconde fois consul pour l’année 168, en pleine guerre contre le roi Persée de Macédoine. Les sources rapportent qu’une fois élu, Paul-Émile s’adressa au peuple romain lors d’une contio afin de l’admonester, reprochant à la population son interférence dans la conduite des opérations militaires. Ce faisant, le discours du nouveau consul nous permet d’entrevoir la formation et la manifestation d’une opinion publique romaine sur la conduite de la politique extérieure de l’ Vrbs, qu’il s’agit d’analyser dans ces lignes.
