Abstract
Abstract Across the animal kingdom, testosterone levels change rapidly within the context of competitive and/or mating related interactions. It has been speculated that such acute changes in testosterone concentrations may ultimately function to regulate ongoing and future behaviors, such as aggression, competitiveness, mate-seeking, and risk-taking. In this chapter, the authors review the growing body of evidence suggesting that competition-induced changes in testosterone positively map onto competitive, aggressive, risk-taking, and mating-related psychological and behavioral processes. The authors also review evidence from single dose pharmacological challenge studies that attempt to draw more substantial causal claims concerning testosterone’s role in promoting these psychological and behavioral processes.
