David B., <i>L’Ascension du haut mal</i> , and the entangled body in pain

Abstract
Linking Des Fitzgerald and Felicity Callard’s theory of the dynamics of entanglement and Thierry Groensteen’s semiotic function of tressage, this article argues that David B.’s graphic memoir L’Ascension du haut mal (1996–2004) [Epileptic (2005)] uses plurivectorial aesthetic and narrative strategies to depict pain, suffering, and trauma. The book explores the intersection of illness and the counterculture in France, the violent networks and legacies of family. David B.’s depiction additionally entangles the pain of the individual and the suffering of the family as he explores illness as a systemic event which shapes the entire domestic unit, and pictures the difficulty of delineating separate identities in a family where one member’s illness is a consuming and resistant vortex at the centre.
