Abstract
Este artigo analisa a carreira do Tenente-Coronel Francisco Xavier Bigode, o último comandante da milícia negra de Salvador, o Regimento (depois Batalhão) de Henrique Dias, desde que assentou praça em 1797 até seu assassinato em 1838, depois da Sabinada. Analisa como ele adaptou sua ideologia barroca do Antigo Regime e sua compreensão do lugar da milícia segregada na ordem colonial aos princípios liberais do novo império brasileiro independente que continuava a pagar aos oficiais negros milicianos assalariados menos que às suas contrapartes brancas e, em 1831, aboliu a milícia negra. Embora não fosse líder no movimento pela Independência, suas quatro décadas de carreira militar abarcaram todo o processo da Independência na Bahia e suas escolhas revelam algumas das opções disponíveis aos brasileiros nessa época.
