L’article se veut une analyse du roman Le soleil se lève au Nord de Doric Germain, écrivain franco-ontarien. Le thème est bien « canadien », étant donné qu’il s’agit d’un retour à la nature. Le protagoniste de l’histoire est Marc Bérard, un adolescent de dix-sept ans. Sa mère décédée, son père hospitalisé, il doit fermer la porte sur ce qui lui est familier, c’est-à-dire la ville : les rues pavées, les gratte-ciel et le confort matériel de la vie urbaine. Du jour au lendemain, il se retrouve chez son oncle, dans la grande forêt d’épinettes du Nord, là où la vie est un combat de tous les instants contre la nature sauvage. Mais cette nature réserve ses trésors et ses secrets à ceux qui savent l’apprivoiser. Quelques mois suffiront pour faire de Marc un jeune homme confiant en l’avenir et en ses capacités. Bien que le point de départ de notre approche soit sociologique, la méthodologie adoptée a permis une analyse du roman plus complexe. L’optique sociologique est équilibrée par celle concentrée sur les questions identitaires car il s’agit d’un roman de l’apprentissage. Le rôle du milieu dans la vie humaine est incontestable, la nature considérée de plus en plus un contrepoids à la civilisation urbaine. Le roman de Doric Germain représente une approche originale envers la thématique qui porte sur les relations entre la nature et l’homme.
