Abstract
This introductory chapter establishes the notion of the return as a central principle that guides human relatedness in a west Greenlandic village, Illorsuit (pseudonym) located in Qeqertarsuup Tunua. People here return in many ways: from schools and jobs in the city, from hunting and fishing on the land and sea; as frequent visitors to each other’s homes, or as a partial reincarnations after they are dead, when their names are given to newborns. They even returned in the nineteen sixties, defying the colonial administration who had closed down the village and ordered resettlement. There is however, an inherent tension in the notion of return between relatedness on the one hand, and longing and loneliness on the other. Without either, the return would be neither possible nor relevant. The chapter discusses how Inuit kinship is often explored in terms of naming practices, thus offering a case to distinguish the ways in which social forms of kinship cut through biological ones. Taking issue with that distinction, this chapter argues instead that it is in the tension between relatedness and loneliness and the many subtle and explicit ways people navigate and negotiate between the two, that we are to understand kinship in Greenland.

Full frame machine prediction
Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
