Abstract
Même observé par le seul prisme de la notion occidentale d’ex-voto, l’objet votif japonais n’a pas encore véritablement bénéficié d’une étude générale, formelle, typologique et historique, en langue française. Dans le contexte japonais qui ne reconnait pas naturellement l’existence d’une telle catégorie d’artefacts, il n’existe pas plus d’étude anthropologique exhaustive des pratiques qui entourent des objets aux fonctions similaires à celles prêtées aux ex-voto occidentaux, tant la variété de ceux-ci répond à des questionnements intellectuels et disciplinaires différents. À la croisée des deux mondes cependant, « l’ex-voto japonais » s’est depuis le xixe siècle incarné dans une petite liste d’objets qui, si elle reflète volontiers plusieurs des caractéristiques d’une notion polysémique, ne traduit pas pour autant la richesse des artefacts et des actes votifs dans l’Archipel et ce qu’ils nous disent plus globalement du Japon passé et présent. Cet article est ainsi pensé pour offrir un panorama plus exhaustif des témoignages matériels d’une transaction entre l’homme et le divin et des enseignements qu’il est possible d’en tirer aujourd’hui.
