Abstract
In the Italian immigrant community that established itself first in the late 19th century and grew vastly larger in the wave of post WW2 immigration to Canada, the church took care of the spiritual needs, while the neighborhood Italian grocery store looked after their physical needs for sustenance. As the Italian community integrated into the fabric of Canadian society the nature of the Italian grocery store changed from neighbourhood store, to supermarket to suburban mega store and boutique merchant of cherished specialty brands.
