Abstract
On June 10, 1940, following Italy's declaration of war on England and its allies, Prime Minister Mackenzie King announced the implementation of the War Measures Act, giving police the authority to apprehend anyone suspected of being a threat to Canada.This gave the RCMP the green light to arrest hundreds of Canadians of Italian origins and to designate thousands of them as Enemy Aliens.This paper will take a look at the consequences that such an Act had on the Italian Canadian community in Sudbury, Ontario by analyzing the events that took place before and after June 10, 1940, through local media outlets, Custodian of Enemy Property and local police records and through interviews of surviving family members of a prominent community leader who was interned and sent to a work camp in Petawawa, Ontario.
