O rio Uberabinha constitui atualmente a melhor opção para o abastecimento de água da cidade de Uberlândia levando-se em consideração a sua proximidade da área urbana, as condições de vazão, a qualidade da água e um sistema hídrico superficial perene. Os solos da bacia do Uberabinha são caracterizados por grande espessura de seus horizontes associados a um relevo plano. Devido a estas características sua ocupação agrícola vem sendo feita de forma intensiva. As atividades agrícolas modernas implicam na utilização de máquinas de grande porte, o que resulta na compactação dos solos e nos problemas como a erosão. Esta forma de ocupação interfere diretamente nas condições naturais de infiltração e armazenamento de águas pluviais nas zonas freáticas. Em vista disso, a pesquisa visou avaliar a influência dos diferentes tipos de usos do solo sobre a recarga da zona freática. A compactação do solo foi avaliada com o uso do Penetrômetro de Impacto e a capacidade de infiltração da água com o Permeâmetro Guelph, em diferentes condições de usos do solo. Os resultados evidenciaram uma significativa diferença nos valores de compactação e de infiltração da água entre as áreas ocupadas por atividades agrícolas e de pecuária e onde ainda se preservam as condições naturais. A situação verificada apontam para possíveis reflexos no armazenamento de água no subsolo.
