Abstract Factor analysis is a statistical method aiming at identifying a relatively small number of underlying (unobserved) factors that could explain certain interdependencies among a larger set of observed variables. Factor analysis proves useful for analyzing causal mechanisms. A suitable general linear model is posited and the maximum likelihood estimates of its parameters are derived. As well, the likelihood ratio statistic is determined and its asymptotic distribution, specified.
