Dentre os problemas que mais fascinaram os matemáticos ao longo da história está a quadratura do círculo. O número irracional π tem relação direta com esse problema e foi peça fundamental na conjectura de sua impossibilidade de solução utilizando apenas régua não graduada e compasso com uma quantidade finita de etapas, como foi proposto por Euclides. A quadratura do círculo é possível sem essas regras e, ainda mais, com ela é possível realizar a transformação da esfera em um prisma de base quadrada.
