Abstract
RESUMO Sistemas de freio a disco são utilizados em alta escala na indústria automotiva mundial, devido à sua eficiência, simplicidade do sistema e fácil manutenção. Neste trabalho, foram desenvolvidos discos de freio de ferro fundido cinzento modificado com nióbio. Foram estudadas as adições de nióbio de 0,11%, 0,17% e 0,26% à composição química de um ferro fundido cinzento comercial. Os discos de freio foram fundidos e usinados até as dimensões e acabamento finais para aplicação. A microestrutura foi avaliada utilizando um microscópio óptico e um software de análise de imagens digitais. O teste de desempenho da frenagem e desgaste foram realizados em um dinamômetro de inércia. Testes não destrutivos foram conduzidos usando líquidos penetrantes para revelar trincas após o teste de frenagem. Além disso, a geração de trincas devido a tensões mecânicas e térmicas cíclicas sofridas pelos discos durante o uso foi explicada. Com o aumento da adição de Nb, observou-se uma tendência ao aumento da estabilidade do atrito e velocidade de assentamento, diminuição da temperatura e redução da perda de desgaste. A adição de nióbio melhorou o comportamento dos discos de freio principalmente na redução ao desgaste do par de atrito, 31% para o disco e 15,5% para as pastilhas. Os melhores resultados foram encontrados no disco 4 com 0,26% de Nb.
