Se presenta la intervención psicológica llevada a cabo en el caso de un varón de 44 años con Artritis Reumatoide. El motivo de consulta es un alto grado de tristeza, ansiedad e irritabilidad. Para la evaluación se emplearon los siguientes instrumentos y técnicas: entrevista clínica, autorregistros y pruebas de autoinforme (Cuestionario Biográfico; Inventario de Situaciones y Respuestas de Ansiedad –ISRA–; Cuestionario Tridimensional para la Depresión –CTD–; Inventario de Expresión de Ira Estado-Rasgo –STAXI 2–; Cuestionario de Dolor de McGill e Inventario de Sugestionabilidad –IS–). La evaluación permitió establecer el diagnóstico, según criterios DSM-IV-TR (APA, 2000), de «Trastorno por dolor asociado a factores psicológicos y a enfermedad médica, de carácter crónico». A partir del análisis funcional del caso se fijaron los objetivos terapeúticos y se planificó el tratamiento cognitivo-conductual, dirigido al control de las emociones negativas y de los niveles de dolor del paciente, así como al manejo de su incapacidad. Los resultados ponen de manifiesto la eficacia de las técnicas de tratamiento empleadas.
