Une chambre à soi de Virginia Woolf, publié en 1929, est devenu le symbole littéraire de la difficulté des femmes à créer. Dans le cadre d’expositions touchant à la place des artistes femmes dans l’histoire de l’art, cet essai est une référence incontournable. En 2009, elles @ centrepompidou est structuré autour de ce texte, tandis qu’en 2015, Qui a peur des femmes photographes? se réfère à Woolf sans jamais la citer directement.
