Abstract
L’attention actuelle portée aux techniques audiovisuelles par les chercheurs a permis de donner un nouvel éclairage à plusieurs moments de l’histoire du cinéma. Parmi ceux-ci, on compte l’avènement du cinéma direct, au tournant des années 1960, qui permet de reconsidérer les liens entre l’émergence de formes inédites et une société en pleine mutation, quinze années après la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Parallèlement au cinéma hollywoodien, qui tente de se renouveler en accentuant la dimension spectaculaire de la projection en salle, le direct est une manière pour le cinéma documentaire de s’inscrire dans un mouvement plurimédiatique qui concerne la télévision, la radio ou le disque, avec pour points communs des enjeux de mobilité, préoccupation majeure d’une époque riche en innovations techniques. Plusieurs cinéastes américains consacrent alors des longs métrages à la musique pop, avec l’intuition qu’il s’agit là de l’expression la plus vive d’une jeunesse en train d’inventer ce qu’on appellera plus tard la « contre-culture ».
