Dans l’oeuvre romanesque et pamphlétaire de Georges Darien (1862-1921), le motif de la foule – parallèlement à celui de l’individu – donne à voir le combat mené par l’écrivain contre l’idéologie post-1870, la bourgeoisie ainsi que les institutions et leurs représentants. Désireux de défendre l’idéal de l’individu libre sur la terre libre, Darien s’empare d’un thème – la foule et ses lexèmes connexes (peuple, tourbe, masses) – qu’il envisage de manière critique, affirmant par là une parole et un style pamphlétaires caractéristiques de l’écrivain révolté qu’il incarne au tournant du xixe siècle, à l’instar d’Octave Mirbeau.
