L’article se base sur une étude dont l’objet est de voir comment les sportifs de haut niveau en handisport gèrent leurs aptitudes mentales en phase compétitive et si les pratiques du golf et du tennis influent sur ces aptitudes mentales. Au haut niveau, le geste technique n’est pas le facteur de différenciation premier, mais bien la capacité mentale, c’est-à-dire, la capacité à faire les bons choix (concentration), à réguler les pensées, gérer le stress et l’anxiété et à rester persévérant (la motivation). Trente personnes ayant des incapacités motrices ont participé à cette étude et ont répondu à un questionnaire portant sur les facteurs psychologiques, construit à partir d’outils validés, avant, pendant et après la compétition. Pour tous les pratiquants, la confiance en soi est importante (soit 17 personnes / 30) et l’aptitude à se surpasser est essentielle (22/30). Néanmoins, les sportifs se disent peu enclins à « se sentir combatifs en situation difficile » (10/30) et à « contrôler leurs émotions » (6/30). L’anxiété est un facteur peu influençant avant, pendant et après la compétition et les moyennes restent basses. Tandis que pour le stress, les sportifs sont plus stressés pendant la compétition, notamment pour les joueurs de tennis. En se penchant sur la concentration, on peut voir que les scores ne sont pas très élevés, ce qui pourrait expliquer cette légère vulnérabilité face aux agents stressants (la phase compétitive). Les sportifs handisport ont une confiance modérée, ce qui est un atout pour mieux gérer son stress. Il serait intéressant de travailler avec eux la prise de conscience des progrès effectués (six personnes concernées seulement par cet item), et à faire avec un contrat entraînement-compétition et un travail spécifique sur l’aptitude mentale comme le discours interne et la fixation d’objectifs pour mieux gérer le stress.
