Le silence des registres d′État civil concernant le sort des orphelins a pour résultat que les chercheurs supposent facilement que les veufs et les veuves restent toujours avec leurs enfants ou que s′ils se remarient, ils regroupent tout simplement les enfants des différents lits. Cette étude démystifie cette supposée stabilité et explore la dynamique réelle d′une communauté et de la parenté face à ces crises que constituent le décès d′un parent, ou plus rarement des deux parents, d′enfants en bas-âge, ainsi que les réaménagements de parenté qui s′en suivent.
